Two members of the Africa Muslim Agency attempt to brace the front gate as thousands of mothers carrying their malnourished children try to push into the therapeutic feeding center in Maradi, Niger. A stampede began after the Nigerien police drove their truck through the crowd killing a mother and child according to witnesses. At the beginning of the week, the center gave away 22 tons of free millet and caused a massive crowd around three sides during the following distribution day. The therapeutic feeding center distributes food and accommodates about 200 people with medical, food, and housing for about a week. A combination of severe drought and a locust plague has caused a food shortage, which has affected at least 2 million people in Niger and about 5 million in the region. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world.
